Sungai Petani (SP) has the most underrated food and many people live here and travel to and fro Penang for work or meals as the distance between these two cities is not that far from each other, approximately 60km or 1 hour of the total journey time.

Although I lived here for a short 1.5 months, I am blessed to have discovered some local gems available here and I can’t wait to share this discovery with you guys!

If you would like to explore other food options slightly farther than SP, I also wrote about Good food around Butterworth, Malaysia.

Spicy & Sour Clams and Fried Squid with Salted Egg

Address

11A, Jalan Seruling, Taman Seruling, 08000 Sungai Petani, Kedah, Malaysia.

Opening Hours

12PM — 12AM (Everyday)

My Thoughts

I came here after a sweaty badminton session with my friends. Feeling full of hunger from the game earlier, I was ready to devour the Thai-inspired food here.

Their Spicy & Sour Clams and Fried Squid with Salted Egg are highly recommended as they taste the best out of all the dishes we tried that night. The clams pack a punch of spicy and sour flavors where Tomyam lovers will certainly approve whereas the squid is perfectly fried.

You can also try their famous Thai Style Steamed Fish as its taste is unique with cauliflowers and cabbage, I would probably describe it as a combination of something that is slightly minty, salty, and sour, but you should definitely try it to find out.

The seafood is fresh and the environment is clean and cozy! Be sure to check this place out whenever you are looking for something unforgettable.

Set Meals and Unagi Cheese Maki

Address

Lorong 24, Taman Petani Jaya, 08000 Sungai Petani, Kedah, Malaysia.

Opening Hours

11.30AM — 9PM (Wed to Mon) *Closed on Tues*

My Thoughts

I’m glad this restaurant has been around for a long time, probably because this place has the most reasonably priced Japanese food I’ve ever encountered in my life.

I would highly suggest ordering any set meals they have and the unagi cheese maki! Do not expect the same standards as some of the chain restaurants available in the city, but it’s good enough for me considering the price I’m paying for. It’s a family-friendly place suitable for gathering with your loved ones, so don’t miss a chance to visit here if you can.

Curry Fish and Roasted Duck

Address

A109, Lorong Ria Indah 12, Taman Ria Indah, 08000 Sungai Petani, Kedah, Malaysia.

Opening Hours

*Not Stated* (Kindly call if you would like to make sure they are open)

My Thoughts

A great place to dine with your family for a simple dinner with extravagant flavors.

The curry fish dish is fragrant with coconut milk and gives this dish a distinctive taste compared to other claypot curry fish out there.

Moreover, the roasted duck has crispy skin with the most tender meat.

Overall this place is suitable for gatherings with family and friends, and also if you’re craving some amazing food in general because they do it all!
