When you think of Penang, usually people only think about the island. To be honest not all the good food are only on the island, these are some of my favorite food around Butterworth or mainland Penang which are also super good without crossing the bridge!

If you still want to cross the bridge and go over to Penang Island for some other food, I also wrote about Nice and Cheap Meals under RM15 in Penang, Malaysia and Best Koay Teow Th’ng Places in Penang, Malaysia.

Steamed Chicken with Dry Kuay Teow Noodles

Address

4562, Jalan Kampung Benggali, Kampung Benggali, 12000 Butterworth, Pulau Pinang.

Opening Hours

11AM — 5.20PM (Everyday)

My Thoughts

I brought my partner to eat here for the first time and he had 2 bowls of the dry kuay teow noodles in a row! He usually doesn’t eat much so this really says a lot.

I really love their steamed chicken and dry kuay teow noodles! The steamed chicken is soft and tender and their dry kuay teow is smooth and hearty. I mean just look at those peeled prawns, I’m already sold.

They are very consistent with their taste and the queue to dine can be long but it’s definitely worth the wait. I suggest to go early if you can before the crowd arrives. Other than these, you can order other side dishes such as wonton soup and vegetables which are yummy too.

Yam Rice

Address

45, Lebuh Kurau 1, Taman Chai Leng, 13700 Perai, Pulau Pinang.

Opening Hours

9.30AM — 4PM (Fri to Wed) *Closed on Thurs*

My Thoughts

One of the famous food in mainland Penang is their yam rice which comes together with the sour soup.

You may add on side dishes such as braised pork, tofu and eggs. Their unique sambal and works well together with the yam rice and soup. The rice served has actual bits of yam inside which gives a nice additional dimension to it.

If you feel like having some good soup and rice on a rainy day, this is the place to be!

Pandan Hua Zi

Address

Jalan Raja Uda, Taman Bunga Raya, 13000 Butterworth, Pulau Pinang.

Opening Hours

3PM — 10PM (Thurs to Tues) *Closed on Wed*

My Thoughts

A stall just beside Zi Wei Yuan Steamboat around their parking lot area, you can find the best fried fritters in town.

I also attached a picture of the stall to show you how it looks like in case you can’t find it.

Personally I enjoy their pandan hua zi the most and it is the best thing you will ever taste in your life, you know what they say, “Belum cuba, belum tau; sekali cuba, hari-hari mau”!

They taste the best when served hot but are still really crispy even if they are left to cool for awhile. From my experience, this place does not operate if it rains, or they would also close once they have sold everything.

Let me know what you think below in the comments if you loved eating at the above places or if you know any other yummy places anywhere else! 🥰
